Previous Lessons: Lesson One, Lesson Two
Lesson Three
The course’s third wine is Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone, coming from the winery Chateau de Saint Cosme. The winery is in the heart of the Gigondas Appellation. A property that has been family owned since 1490 and winegrowers that go back 14 generations. “The Barruol’s ancestors acquired it in 1570, and at the end of the sixteenth century built a splendid residence over existing cellars.” (http://www.saintcosme.com/en/) A rare fact about the winery is that it is located at the crossing of two geological faults, which makes the soil unique. Another interesting fact is the connection to the Finger Lakes. The owner of Chateau de Saint Cosme, Louis Barroul, is partners in the Forge Cellars project. Their first vintage in 2011 was 300 cases of Riesling and Pinot Noir.
This Cote du Rhone is 100% Syrah grape. 2013 was a great year for Syrah in the region and this translated into a wine full of fruit, fresh aromas and nice tight texture. Notes of licorice, violet, red-berry and black currant on the palate. This fits nicely into the winemakers vision: “I want to make wines which express their terroir with purity and personality.”
Chateau de Saint Cosme – $12.99 a bottle.
