Course Description:
This section is in part and in conjunction with the Wine 100 level courses. In this particular section (101) we delve into 10 traditionally produced wines from 10 classic regions. Regions include: Nemea, Greece. Loire Valley, France. Burgundy, France. Bordeaux, France. Rhone, France. Mosel, Germany. Tuscany, Italy. Rioja, Spain. Sonoma County, California. Finger Lakes, New York. Coursework will include a variety of readings about the wines and their given regions. Also opening and consuming of the wines so that the contents can be studied, as well as understood in order to provide the key concepts of these traditional wine regions.

Thus far in Wine 101 – Getting to Know 10 Classic Wines we have explored some of the oldest wines in the course. Lesson four’s Dr. Konstantin Frank Dry Riesling is the newest to wine making out of the group of 10. Although the newer of the bunch winery Dr. Konstantin Frank has been turning out wine since 1962, only a decade after Dr. Frank arrived in the United States. Dr. Konstantin Frank known as “the father of Vinifera” for Eastern United Stated for taking New York’s Finger Lakes region and elevating it to a higher standard and shining an international light on the area. Dr. Frank passed the winery onto his son Willy who started Chateau Frank, Finger Lakes Sparkling in the tradition of French Champagne. In 1993 Willy in turn pass on leadership it onto his son Frederick. Frederick along with his cousin Eric Volz also expanded as well with the value brand Salmon Run. Topping it off Dr. Konstantin Frank is New York’s most award winning winery since it’s inception in 1962.
Dr. Frank’s 2013 Dry Riesling “Has a delightfully fresh palate and delicate bouquet of citrus, apple blossoms and honey. It presents a characteristic Keuka Lake Riesling minerality. Dr. Frank’s and Riesling have gone hand in hand for over fifty years. We consider Riesling to be our most prized varietal here and are proud to produce some of the most critically acclaimed Rieslings in the Finger Lakes Region.” (http://www.drfrankwines.com/Our-Wines) Although the youngest of the ten, Dr. Konstantin Frank Dry Riesling is a perfect wine to experience the excellence of an already well established region. This wines pairs well with shellfish, chicken and mild cheese dishes.
