Is This The Next Big Thing Out of Argentina?

SHOP NOW

When talking Argentinean reds, we’re almost always talking the same grape and region, Malbec from Mendoza.

Which is why this glowing red really snuck up on us, how about Syrah from San Juan instead? And how about the most remarkable Syrah we’ve ever tasted for under $10?

Founded by Kiwi winemaker Duncan Killiner a bit over twenty years ago, Jelu has been on our radar for a long time, but mainly for their sneakily excellent Pinot Noir. It was only about a month ago we had the opportunity to taste this Syrah, one of those rare moments where it was almost beyond comprehension that we could offer this much wine at such a excellent price.
Situated over a series of valleys a bit north of Mendoza, San Juan benefits from long sun exposure, with the hot days and cool nights that really coax the Syrah grape to express itself. After tasting this red, we’re confident in predicting that Syrah grown in San Juan is very likely be the next big thing out of Argentina.

Need more convincing? How about a stunning 92 point rating from Decanter Magazine, perhaps the strictest publication there is when it comes to doling out high ratings.

Velvety, brambly and dark, with a few years in the bottle to soften the wild edges, this peppery and luminous Syrah is destined to become your go-to red wine value!
